Coronary Angiogram/Angioplasty Pre-procedure guide

Coronary Angiogram

A coronary angiogram is a procedure that uses X-ray imaging to examine if there are any blockages in the heart vessels (artery). It involves the insertion of a thin flexible tube (catheter) into the artery located in the groin area or wrist. During the procedure, a dye is injected into the blood vessels. The X-ray machine then takes a series of images to observe for any blockages or narrowing in the arteries. If necessary, the doctor can open up the blocked arteries (angioplasty) following the coronary angiogram procedure.

Preparation for procedure
What do I need to bring?
  • Copy of admission form.
  • Identification Card/Passport.
  • Insurance card (if any).
  • Deposit as required (cash/credit card).
  • Company’s Guarantee Letter (if the charges are borne by the company/employer).
  • All your medication.
  • Loose attire.
  • Slippers with a non-slip sole to prevent slipping.
  • Dentures, glasses and hearing aids (if any).
  • Entertainment items such as books, tablets and laptops to help occupy your time during admission.

Please leave your valuable items at home. The ward will not be liable or responsible for any item in the room.

The ward cannot accept responsibility for items left in the ward and will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items.

What do I need to do?
  • Tell your doctor all the medicines and supplements that you take. Your doctor will tell you if you should stop taking them before the procedure and how soon to do it.
  • You will be notified if there is a need to do a blood test, X-ray, ECG or other tests upon admission.
  • Fast for at least 4 hours prior to the procedure.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Do not wear any contact lenses or make-up.
  • Do not wear any nail polish on the day of the procedure.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes on the day of the procedure for your comfort.
What to expect?
  • If there is a change in the date or procedure time, you will be notified after 3 pm on the day before the procedure.
  • Please be sure to arrive at the designated time. This is necessary to complete the admission process and prepare for the procedure. This includes shaving the groin and wrist.
  • If you are not on time, your angiogram procedure might be delayed.
  • A small incision is made at the entry site, and a short plastic tube (sheath) is inserted into your artery. The catheter is inserted through the sheath into your blood vessel and carefully threaded into your heart or coronary arteries.
  • A dye will be injected through the sheath into the arteries. The dye allows the doctor to view your arteries on an X-ray monitor.
  • As it moves through your blood vessels, your doctor can observe its flow and identify any blockages or constricted areas. Depending on what your doctor discovers during your angiogram, you may have additional catheter procedures at the same time, such as balloon angioplasty or stent placement to open up a narrowed artery.
  • You are advised to call our Admission Counter one day before to confirm your admission.
